    The job of a Retail Cashier is vital to any store. Often serving as one of the only employees customers interact with, a cashier is the face of many retail establishments. Cashier is a common entry-level job that offers many opportunities for growth and advancement.

    What Does a Retail Cashier Do?

    Below is a basic job description for a Retail Cashier. Exact responsibilities will vary by store, but common duties include:

    • Accurately and quickly scan items 
    • Accept all forms of payment, including cash, cards, checks, coupons, etc. 
    • Understand store policy and act accordingly 
    • Keep a neat workstation
    • Act as a point of contact for customers
    • Package/bag items neatly and correctly 
    • Troubleshoot technical issues
    • Help customers find items 
    • Issue receipts and keep accurate records of transactions
    • Keep an accurate balance of funds in the cash register
    • Create rapport with customers to keep them coming back
